Our Land, Our History, Our Culture

In the Cree language, "Kikino" means "Our Home".  Kikino is one of the eight Métis Settlements in Canada. It was formed in 1938 as a place for Métis to settle and build their livelihoods so that they would no longer be known as the 'forgotten people'.

One of Kikino's most famous residents was Adrian Hope. He was one of the founding Fathers of the Federation of Métis Settlements who spent his life working towards the betterment of the Métis people in Alberta.

Mr. Hope was also a famous Canadian, known as the Canadian Kid, he was a world champion rodeo cowboy, he appeared in several Hollywood movies and traveled extensively promoting the Métis way of life.  (Source: "Home » Culture » Metis Nation of Alberta." Mr. Hope lived near Whitefish Lake and it was a dream of his that Kikino open a resort on the shores of this beautiful lake. When the resort officially opened in 1988, the Kikino Metis Settlement named it after Mr. Hope in memory of his many life achievements.
